I decided to start my first blog with an author that I have grown very fond of over the years. I am talking about Edger Allan Poe. I remember first reading some of his stories in junior high for one of my English classes and I think the first piece we read from Poe was his poem "The Raven". It is an interesting poem that I think most people will enjoy if they read it a couple times. A lot of his poems and stories are written in a strong gothic style. They usually take place during the night time and are told through a first person perspective. Poe also has a different vocabulary compared with writers of today. Since he lived in the early 1800's, there are definitely moments in his writing where I had no idea what he was talking about. It can make understanding some of his work challenging, but I can still manage to figure it out after reading over it a couple times. I think Poe was a very talented writer and it is amazing how his stories are still read regularly by people today.

  1. Sadly, I can't really recall reading about Poe in junior high or high school. I borrowed a huge book with almost all of his works from my friend, but haven't had the chance to pick it up. Sounds like you enjoy his works! I'm sure I'd have to read a lot of them over multiple times to fully understand. From the few things I've read, I completely agree with you when you mention his style being different. Language back then seems to be much more elaborate than it is now. He definitely was talented, or else his stuff wouldn't be around today like it is. Almost everyone has heard of Poe, and people will hear of him for many years to come. I can tell a good bit about his style and how he writes from your blog.

  2. Back when I was in high school, we talked about Poe and we read The Tell Tale Heart. From the moment we read that I fell in love with his stories and his creative writing. I also learned that he married his cousin or second cousin which I find weird.
